Ad Specifications

For optimum reproduction quality, your materials should be sent according to the following specifications.

Output

PDF/X-1a files required for all ads. View specifications at www.swop.org or www.adobe.com/designcenter/acrobat/articles/acr6pdfx.html.

  • Fonts embedded.
  • All colors must be converted to CMYK.
  • Crop marks and color bars must be outside printable area (12pt offset).
  • Only one ad per PDF document. (Submit spreads as single-page files, indicating right-hand page [RHP] and left-hand page [LHP] in file names.)
  • Full page ad document size: must be set to publication trim size. Add ½” outside trim for bleed ads. Live area is 38” from trim.
  • Fractional page ad document: size must be set to actual ad size; use a border rule. ASHA does not float ads.

Document Setup

  • Use QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign for ad layouts.
  • Photoshop: Select 300 dpi CMYK or grayscale, 600 dpi minimum bitmap, flattened layers, .tif or .eps format, binary encoding (no JPEG and no extra channels).
  • Illustrator: Outline all fonts, flatten transparencies, embed all elements (no links). All fonts must be Type 1 or OpenType (Multiple Master Fonts are strongly discouraged).
  • All colors must be CMYK;
  • no PMS/Pantone colors.
  • Black Text 12 pt. or smaller must be black only. (C=0%, M=0%, Y=0%, K=100%).
  • Ink density must not to exceed 300%.

Unacceptable File Types

Do not submit Ad layout in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe PageMaker or Freehand files. Text for ad creation may be submitted in Word. If you need assistance with ad creation, contact your sales representative.

Proofs

A hard copy contact proof is required for all ads. A contract proof printed at 100% with registration marks and color bars can be used for color accuracy if SWOP® approved. View specifications online at www.swop.org. Publisher cannot be held responsible for the final outcome of ad/color on press if the appropriate proof is not provided.

Failure to follow these guidelines may require additional time and cost and/or sacrifice reproduction quality. The publisher is not responsible for the final reproductive quality of any materials provided that do not meet specifications.
